The Magdeburg Water Bridge (German: Kanalbrücke Magdeburg) is a large navigable aqueduct in central Germany, located near Magdeburg. Planning for the canal crossing dates back to at least the beginning of the 20th century. It also appears in the film Vitou the Kong. The bridge was officially opened on 24 August 2013[10] and has been open to traffic since the morning of 26 August 2013. After the war, the government of East Germany did not resume work on the project because east-west trade was no longer important in the context of the Cold War. The bridge was intended to remedy inner-city traffic congestion. In April 2006, the city council stopped the plans following the UNESCO complaint. The bridge was intended to remedy inner-city traffic congestion. They emerged from the first crossings over River Elbe, and today, due to the low headroom, form a barrier east of the Port of Hamburg which can't be passed by sea ships. Its construction was highly controversial, as the Dresden Elbe Valley had been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and UNESCO expressed strong concerns against the bridge, noting its intent to withdraw the World Heritage title if the bridge were built. After almost eight years of preparation for the process of obtaining planning permission, a public referendum on whether to build the bridge was held in 2005. The bridge is featured in the motion picture Hanna, at approximately 75 minutes into the film. The bridges constitute an important link within the city-state of Hamburg and connect the districts north of the Elbe, including the inner city of Hamburg with the Wilhelmsburg, the Veddel and the port area as well as with the borough of Harburg to the south of the Elbe and the region beyond. This resulted in a majority voting for the bridge. The basin spans four countries, however it lies almost entirely just in two of them, Germany (65.5%) and the Czech Republic (33.7%, covering about two thirds of the state's territory). [4] The ruling was described by Vice President of the German Bundestag Wolfgang Thierse as "a sad day for Germany". [1] As a result of this project, the Dresden Elbe Valley was listed in 2006 as an "Endangered World Heritage Site" (one of two in Europe, the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo being the other one), and in 2009 became only the second World Heritage Site to be de-listed. The Hamburg Elbbrücken form, along with the Old Elbe Tunnel (1911, below Norderelbe) and the New Elbe Tunnel (1975, under re-united River Elbe) the last fixed Elbe crossings before the mouth into the North Sea. For this article, the bridges are listed by Hamburg's three major rivers (Alster, Bille and Elbe) … The largest canal underbridge in Europe, it spans the river Elbe and directly connects the Mittellandkanal to the west and Elbe-Havel Canal to the east of the river, allowing large commercial ships to pass between the Rhineland and Berlin without having to descend into and then climb out of the Elbe itself. The Elbbrücken (Elbe bridges) are several independent bridge structures crossing the river Elbe in Hamburg, Germany. It is the only time a European site has ever been delisted, and only the second in the world. Beobachten Sie seltene Vögel, Biber und beenden Sie Ihre Reise in einem Bastei Bridge is a 76,5 m man made bridge which connects the rock formations. In particular, the term refers to several parallel railroad and road bridges over River Elbe in central Hamburg, divided into Norderelbbrücken (Northern Elbe bridges) and Süderelbbrücken (Southern Elbe bridges). Today, especially the Norderelbbrücken are considered a landmark of Hamburg.[1]. After the reunification of Germany, the reestablishment of major water transport routes made the water bridge a priority again. German courts ruled in November 2007 that work could resume. [6], On 25 June 2009 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO voted to remove the status of World Heritage Site from the Dresden Elbe Valley because of the construction of the Waldschlösschenbrücke. [2][7], The bridge was designed by ESKR: Eisenloffel and Sattler (engineers) and Kolb and Ripke (architects) who won the open competition in 1997. [2], As plans to build a bridge at this location had existed for a century, in 1996, in line with a revised traffic model, the Dresden City Council agreed to the project. Within Hamburg, the Elbe divides into two main anabranches, the Norderelbe (Northern Elbe) and the Süderelbe (Southern Elbe), which, after the Alte Süderelbe (Old Southern Elbe) was sealed off, reunite with the Norderelbe via the Köhlbrand anabranch, bypassing the Elbe islands, of which Wilhelmsburg is the largest river island on the Elbe. In addition to the bridge, a double lock was constructed to allow vessels to descend from the level of the bridge and Mittelland Canal to that of the Elbe-Havel Canal. You will see the river Elbe, the Lilienstein mountain and Koenigstein fortress just to name a few. In addition, the Elbe bridges have a significant national function as a north-south link in European rail traffic and within the crossings of the federal motorways (A 1, A 253) and federal highways (B 4 / B 75). The water bridge now connects Berlin’s inland harbour network with the ports along the Rhine River. Work on the Mittellandkanal began in 1905, while work on the overall project continued until 1942, when all construction was brought to a halt because of World War II. Juni (Bridge of 17th June), which are both part of the Hamburg Elbbrücken are generally signposted only as Elbbrücken, as the Freihafenelbbrücke (former free economic zone) and the motorway bridges are excluded and journeys over the other bridges would be a detour.
